Full Bathroom Gut Remodel — Calacatta Marble Tile, Floor to Ceiling

The original bathroom was 23 years old — dated 12×12 tile, a sliding frosted glass door, an old tub/shower combo, and a granite-top vanity that had seen better days. The homeowners wanted a complete transformation: a walk-in shower, modern large-format tile, and finishes that matched the caliber of their Inverness home. Everything came out down to the studs.

Before demo started, the entire adjacent living area was sealed off with plastic sheeting from floor to ceiling — protecting the homeowners' furniture, flooring, and air quality throughout the project. Full gut demolition followed: all tile, drywall, and fixtures removed down to the concrete block wall and subfloor. New copper plumbing rough-in was set for the updated shower layout.

The waterproofing system is what separates a remodel that lasts 5 years from one that lasts 25. GoBoard cement backer was installed on all shower walls — a fully waterproof, mold-resistant substrate. The Wedi shower pan system was set with a Noflo waterproof membrane over the entire shower floor, sealed at every seam and corner. This is the work that's never seen again once tile goes up, but it's the most important phase of the project.

The signature decision on this project: carrying the Calacatta marble-look porcelain to the ceiling on all four walls, including the shower ceiling. Large-format tiles were installed with precision leveling clips throughout to achieve near-zero lippage across every surface. A mud bed was floated for the main bathroom floor. The shower floor was tiled in the same Calacatta with a diamond-set drain centered in the layout. A custom triple niche was built into the shower wall — three shelves, all wrapped in matching tile.

The completed bathroom features floor-to-ceiling Calacatta marble porcelain on all walls and the shower ceiling, a new walk-in shower with frameless sliding glass door and rain head system, custom triple niche with three shelves, Calacatta quartz vanity top, new white shaker vanity with brushed nickel hardware, LED backlit smart mirror, and a designer square drain centered in the shower floor. Three weeks from first demo day to final walkthrough.
