Dated oak or builder-grade cabinets are one of the most common reasons homeowners in Buffalo Grove, Lake Zurich and Schaumburg call us. The question is always the same: can we just paint them, or do we need new cabinets? Here’s how we answer it.
The cost difference
| Option | Typical range | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Professional cabinet painting | $4,500–$11,000 | 5–8 working days |
| Kitchen refresh with new cabinets, same layout | $22,000–$45,000 | 3–5 weeks after cabinets arrive |
| Full remodel with layout changes | $45,000–$110,000+ | 4–10 weeks after cabinets arrive |
Painting typically costs a fraction of new cabinets and you keep using your kitchen through most of the job.
Paint them when…
- The boxes are solid wood or plywood and in good shape — no water swelling under the sink, no sagging shelves.
- The layout works. You have enough storage and the sink, range and fridge are where you want them.
- You like the door style, or a simple shaker look would suit you once the color changes.
- You want a big change on a smaller budget — often paired with new hardware, a new backsplash or counters.
Replace them when…
- The boxes are particleboard that’s swollen, chipped or delaminating.
- The layout is the real problem — not enough storage, no island, or a work triangle that doesn’t work.
- You’re already replacing counters and want ceiling-height uppers, deeper drawers or an island.
- Doors are thermofoil (vinyl-wrapped) and peeling — those don’t take paint well.
What a lasting cabinet paint job involves
Cabinet paint fails when prep is skipped. A durable job includes removing and labeling doors and drawer fronts, degreasing every surface, scuff-sanding, applying a bonding primer, and spraying a hard-curing cabinet enamel. Oak grain can be left visible or filled for a smooth, modern finish. New soft-close hinges and hardware are easy to add while the doors are off.
Not sure? We do both
Because we do cabinet painting and full kitchen remodeling, we have no reason to push you toward one or the other. We’ll look at the boxes, the layout and your budget and tell you honestly which makes sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it?
Yes, if the boxes are solid and the layout works. It delivers most of the visual change for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets.
How long do painted cabinets last?
Properly prepped and sprayed cabinets with a cabinet-grade enamel hold up for many years. Peeling almost always traces back to skipped degreasing, sanding or primer.
