If you’re getting quotes to paint a room or a whole house in Barrington, Palatine, Arlington Heights or anywhere in the Northwest Suburbs, the numbers can be all over the place. One painter says $400 a room, another says $1,200. Here is what actually drives the price, and the ranges we see on real homes in 2026.

Typical interior painting prices in 2026

ProjectTypical range
Bedroom or office, walls only (two coats)$450–$900
Same room with ceiling and trim$800–$1,600
Two-story foyer or stairwell$900–$2,500
Kitchen cabinets (sprayed)$4,500–$7,500+
Whole-house interior, 2,000–3,000 sq ft$7,500–$16,000+

These are ranges for occupied homes with normal wear. They include moving and covering furniture, masking, minor patching, two finish coats and cleanup. Paint itself usually makes up only 15–25% of the price — most of what you pay for is skilled labor and preparation.

What makes one quote higher than another

1. How much prep is really included

This is the biggest difference between quotes. Filling nail pops, repairing cracks, sanding glossy trim, caulking gaps and spot-priming stains takes time — and it’s what makes new paint look sharp. A low quote often means prep is minimal or not included at all. Ask every painter to list the prep steps in writing.

2. Ceilings, trim and doors

Walls are the fastest surface to paint. Trim, doors and ceilings are slower, detailed work, which is why “room with ceiling and trim” can cost nearly double “walls only.” Six-panel doors and multi-piece crown molding add more.

3. Ceiling height and access

Vaulted great rooms and two-story foyers — very common in Inverness, South Barrington and Hawthorn Woods — need staging or tall ladders and take longer to cut in safely.

4. Color changes

Going light-to-light usually takes two coats. Covering a dark accent wall or going from a deep color to white can need a primer coat plus two finish coats.

5. Condition of the walls

Older homes in Palatine, Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect often have plaster walls with hairline cracks, or several old layers of paint on trim. Those cracks need to be properly repaired, not just painted over, or they come back within a season.

Homes built before 1978

Many Northwest Suburbs homes were built before 1978, when lead-based paint was still in use. Under the U.S. EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, work that disturbs painted surfaces in those homes — sanding or scraping — must follow lead-safe practices. If your home is that age, mention it when you get estimates and ask how the painter handles it.

Is winter a good time to paint inside?

Yes. Interior paint doesn’t care what the weather is doing outside, and late fall through early spring is when painting schedules open up. You can often get on the calendar within one to two weeks, compared with a longer wait in late spring.

How to compare quotes fairly

Our interior painting estimates list every one of these items. If you’re planning a bigger project, painting can also be scheduled as the final phase of a renovation.
