Short answer: interior painting, yes — exterior painting, no. Here’s how the seasons actually work for painting in Barrington and the rest of the Northwest Suburbs, and how to use the off-season to your advantage.
Interior painting in winter
Inside your heated home, conditions are perfect for paint all year. Modern low-odor waterborne paints dry quickly, and with the heat on, rooms are ready to use the same day or the next.
- Shorter wait times. Painters are busiest from late spring through summer. In late fall and winter you can usually get started within one to two weeks.
- Before the holidays. November is popular for refreshing living rooms, dining rooms and guest rooms before family arrives.
- Ventilation. We crack a window or run fans briefly when needed, but most interior jobs don’t require opening the house up for long.
Cabinet painting in winter
Cabinet refinishing is ideal winter work. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in a set-up area and cure in controlled conditions, while the boxes are painted in place. Most kitchens take about 5–8 working days.
Why exterior painting waits for spring
Exterior paint needs surface and air temperatures above the product’s minimum — often 35–50°F depending on the paint — and it needs to stay there while the paint cures, including overnight. Morning dew, frost and short days make that unreliable here from late fall through early spring.
In the Chicago area, exterior painting usually runs from about late April through mid-October. Painting in cold weather risks poor adhesion, cracking and peeling that won’t show up until next year.
How to use the off-season
- Do the inside now. Get interior rooms and cabinets done while schedules are open.
- Get your exterior estimate in winter. We can look at the house, note any rotted trim and lock in a spring date before the calendar fills.
- Pick colors early. If your HOA requires approval — common in Schaumburg and Vernon Hills townhome communities — winter is the time to submit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you paint the outside of a house in November?
Usually not in the Chicago area. Exterior paint needs temperatures above its minimum during application and curing, and late-fall nights are too cold and damp to rely on.
Is it OK to paint inside with the heat on?
Yes. A heated house is a good environment for interior paint, and rooms dry quickly.
